Prevention and Screening

Breast Health Centers at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital offer the latest in screening and diagnostics, including 3D mammography. Studies show that adding 3D mammography to traditional digital screening can significantly improve the detection of breast cancer, especially in women with dense breast tissue or those at high risk of developing the disease.

3D mammography is proven to:

  • Detect smaller breast cancers earlier
  • Provide greater accuracy in pinpointing tumor size and location
  • Reduce the number of patents who require follow-up testing

Breast imaging services also include:

  • Screening digital mammograms
  • Diagnostic mammograms with computer assisted diagnosis (CAD)
  • Breast MRI and MRI-guided biopsies
  • Breast ultrasound and ultrasound guided biopsies
  • Self-referred screening mammograms (available only at Delnor Hospital)
  • Stereotactic breast biopsies

Also available at Central DuPage Hospital (CDH) and Delnor Hospital breast care sites:

  • Bone Density Scans (DEXA)

Preparing for Your Mammogram

On the day of your mammogram, plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.

  • Please bring your most recent previous mammogram to your appointment for comparison with new pictures, as the radiologist looks for changes in breast tissue
  • Please wear a two-piece outfit since you’ll need to remove your top for the test. Do not use deodorant, perfume, powder, creams or lotions on your breast or under arm area. Residue from the products may interfere with mammogram results

Depending on the view of your breast to be taken, you will be asked to sit or stand. Some women may experience slight discomfort, but the procedure is not harmful and will not damage breast tissue.

Diagnostic Services

Breast Health Centers at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital offer advanced testing and diagnostics for breast health including:

  • Breast MRI and MRI-guided biopsies
  • Breast ultrasound and ultrasound guided biopsies
  • Diagnostic mammograms with computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) and same-day results
  • Needle localizations
  • Stereotactic breast biopsies
