About the ICE App

In the event of an emergency, if you are unable to communicate, the Northwestern Medicine ICE app will provide first responders with contact information for the person you designate as your ICE – in case of emergency – contact. The name and phone number of your ICE contact will appear on ICE app banner – even when your phone is locked. All other information stored on your phone will be accessible only after the phone has been unlocked by the owner or the lock code has been provided to the authorities.

The ICE app also allows you to store important medical information about your blood type, current medications, medication allergies, health conditions and organ donor registration designations.

Installation Instructions for iPhone

  1. Access the iPhone app store and search Northwestern Medicine ICE.
  2. In the right hand corner of your iPhone, click install and download the free app.
  3. Once the ICE app is installed, launch the app by clicking on the NM ICE app icon. You will be prompted to choose two emergency contacts from your phone's contact list. Listing two contacts is optional; you are only required to choose one.
  4. Once you have identified your emergency contact(s), you will need to select a wallpaper photo. You may set your contacts and their phone numbers on the wallpaper, or create a generic wallpaper that directs first responders to the ICE app for contact information. A new photo with this information will be stored in your camera roll or photo library. (On the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s, the wallpaper may zoom in, cutting off a portion of the ICE banner. This can be resolved by going into the Settings menu on your phone and turning on the Reduce Motion feature. From the Settings menu, select General and then select Accessibility. Slide the toggle switch to turn Reduce Motion on.)
  5. Once the photo is stored, go into your photo library and select the photo. Click on the arrow icon on the bottom left-hand corner of the image. Choose to "Use as Wallpaper." Move and scale your image to the desired size and select "Set." In order for the app to work to its fullest potential, choose to either "Set Lock Screen" or "Set Both."
