In 2010, Congress passed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. A key provision of this Act requires virtually all Americans to have health insurance beginning January, 2014.
To facilitate enhanced access to affordable health plans, health insurance marketplaces have been created throughout the country. On October 1, 2013, the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace, called Get Covered Illinois, opened, offering Illinois residents access to a wide variety of health plans.
